Who Has Time to Waste on People You Don’t Like?

josscharactersNear the end of last year I went to a panel at Salt Lake ComicCon that was  a “Why We Love Joss Wheadon” fan fest. I like a whole lot of Joss Wheadon’s stuff, so I went thinking I could use what others said in my writing.

First rule of writing I ever learned: If you like something, steal the hell out of it.

When the questions started, at least ten people cited the characters as their favorite parts about Joss’ stories. The rest of the people in the room nodded their heads like crazed bobble head dolls. Toy Story, Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, the Avenger movies…and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

It didn’t take long for me to join the bobble head nation. It’s true, Firefly is a quirky universe, but Jane names his guns and Wash plays with dinosaur figurines. While vampires have been done and done, there’s something about Buffy’s crew that keeps us coming back for more. And let’s be serious, without the great characters is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, it would have been just another obscure upload in the YouTube ether.

As I listened while grown men and women gushed all over the floor about Joss’ characters, I thought, “It can’t be that easy.”
Could it?

Turns out it’s not particularly easy, but is it that simple.

If  people don’t like your characters, or at least identify with them, they stop caring, which leads to them changing the channel, switching shows on Netflix or putting your book down. Because let’s face it, who has time to waste on people you don’t like? Real life forces us to do this, but we have control over our entertainment. (Unless you lose the battle for the remote, but that’s a totally different issue.)

In proper writer fashion, I Googled the top rated books about writing character and bought a couple. I trolled blogs, because thousands of people have come before me, and surely one or two of them have something helpful to say. I started analyzing the shows we were watching. I made my husband think it was his idea to find interesting character traits, which I’m not going to lie, has been very helpful.

Now I could go on and on and on about this, but due to time, I’ll boil it down to what have become my top four character rules.

1-Each character needs a goal. Something they want. This must be the driving force of every decision they make in the story. A football player wants to win that big game. The nerdy guy wants to get the popular girl. The solider wants to get back home in one piece.

2-More important than what the character wants so badly, is what the character needs. They don’t know they need it until it smacks them in the face like wet fish—can’t miss that. At the fish smacking moment, the character changes, possibly shifting their decisions away from their once goal to what they now realize is much more important. Suddenly winning that big game isn’t as important as being with their family, or being rich pales in comparison with the true love they’ve discovered along the way.

3-Delve into your characters. Give them more than an age, an occupation and a gender. Go beyond the first layer of problems and get to the bottom of what your character is about. Why do the doctor’s hands tremble each time he takes a scalpel? What really happened? Does he have nightmares about it? How does it affect his daily decisions? How does it affect his main goal in the story?

4-#Bemeantocharacters. Just do it. Make their adorable, little lives miserable. As an author you must allow them a respite or two, but make sure that the emotional  spectrum looks like a crazed polygraph readout and not a flat line full of stereotypes and tropes.

Earlier this year I released Fractured Memories, my first Indie book, and the first in a five book series. My beta readers told me my characters were flat (this was just before ComicCon) so when I revised it, I gave them a boost. Fast forward to now, and quite a few of the reviews for the book mention the characters and how much the readers liked them. This brings that creepy, evil author smile to my lips.

Achievement unlocked.
There’s always more to learn, but it’s good to know I’m on the right track!

The Death and Resurrection of the Horror Shelf

Starting in the late 1970’s, if you mentioned the word horror, people assumed you meant cheerleaders getting chopped up into kibbles by either a paranormal creature or a psychopath with an inordinate amount of hit points.

In fact, people were so used to Jason and Freddy that the reading public started to push back on the genre. Things got so bad that authors and publishers did strange things to say that their horror books were not horror…they were…ummm…thrillers! or suspense! Anything but the dreaded “H” word. Even retailers like Barnes and Noble, who once had several shelves labeled “Horror” which mostly meant “Stephen King, Clive Barker, Peter Straub, and a couple of others we accidentally picked up from the distributor”, began to pull those labels and switch it to Thriller! or Suspense! or even Cookbooks!

Those slasher movies were incredibly cheap to make, exploited partially-clad young women who would scream loudly when they met the antagonist, and made a boat-load of money in the theaters. The books weren’t as successful, which bled over into the other sub-genres of the horror market. Ghost stories, paranormal creatures who fell in love, apocalyptic zombie-fests were all tarred and feathered during the mid 80’s into the 90’s. The horror market collapsed, and the authors and publishers began to either publish titles under established categories like “thriller” or created new ones, such as “paranormal romance”. The latter didn’t even exist in the 1980’s, and now bookstores have whole sections dedicated to books such as Twilight. Amazon shows 18,834 ebooks in the Kindle Paranormal Romance category. It’s a huge market, and the romance crossover is bringing in people who didn’t read anything else but straight romance for years.

There are folks who do enjoy the slasher bloodfests, and whole sub-genres grew out of the grave of horror. Pioneers like John Skipp helped to create an even bloodier version of the slasher novel, and the Splatterpunk niche was born. Some authors combined some horror elements with bizarre, LSD flashback inspired bits and the Bizarro niche burst onto the scene. Carlton Mellick III’s novel The Haunted Vagina is an example which will make you wonder if the world isn’t ending tomorrow because now you’ve seen everything.

It’s been a couple of decades since the word “horror” was the proverbial kiss of death for a book. Self-published authors are poking their heads out of the shadows and using the word on their book covers. With the general acceptance of all of the new niches, especially paranormal romance, the publishing industry is including that word in the book descriptions and on dust jackets once again. It is important, however to always be vigilent about the book market. If something like the Great Horror Death ever happens again, you need to be aware of how the industry is reacting. It’s better to re-classify your book before the Big 5’s creaky machine gets around to it. Authors and small publishers need to keep on their toes, and that means reading what’s new and trending in the industry at least several times a week.

To risk getting caught twisting in the winds of market share just fills one with a sense of horror.

Lenalia Like many writers, I was caffeinated in a not-so-counter-culture coffee shop the day that I became serious about writing. It’s not that I knew what I was writing at the time, or that there was anything special about the day, mayhaps a Saturday. It was just that I felt the threads of productivity resonating and for whatever reason my stream of conscious was somewhere completely dislocated from my body, having some sort of wild acid-free paper trip. That trip just happened to be perfectly timed.

Co-occuringly, assembling in the minds of several well-placed strangers was the idea of forming a writing meetup. This coalignment of events, seemingly disparate, was what brought about the makings of my first book, Lenalia.

When I attended that first writing session with twitchy eyes and torpid creativity, I had no idea how important the group would become to me. I went in selfish and simple, thinking that it would be a way for me to write consistently and receive critique. Though I certainly cannot undervalue those two benefits of the group, as feedback and consistency are key, the community was so much more.

I spent close to two years attending and helping lead the weekly meetup. The constant flux of its peripheral members allowed for me to experience a plethora of writing styles and techniques while the persistence of its core members gave me insights into how writers evolve their work and themselves over time. My critiques not only allowed me to help others, but it showed me how to analyze story and characters separate from prose. My writing went from playdough to playful, from full of errors to airless and concise. In every interaction I had with the group was another piece of stimuli that helped shape my work and myself.

And those were just the direct benefits. It turns out, the group was full of people. Living, breathing, unique, some odd, mostly even people. People that were striving and struggling through the same writer’s block or character collapse as me. Seasoned and raw writers that helped form a support network, making me realize that writing doesn’t have to be a solitary sport.

So now, even when alone, as I sit sipping on the brewed aromas of a midnight latte, my body withering into the dust that sifts through the hourglass of my life, I can rekindle thoughts of my first community, knowing that it helped define me as a writer.

I Will Always Keep Writing

When I was really young, apparently my favorite thing was to “write” with pen and paper.  Granted, no one but maybe an alien could have read it, but at least I committed something to paper.

I was fortunate in the fact that my sixth grade English teacher, Mrs. Clay, was my biggest inspiration as a child. It was my first year in a new school, and she took me under her wing. I think she saw a terrified child with a lot of potential. With her encouragement and guidance, I entered my first writing contest. It turned out to be a lot of fun. I had to write a short story, illustrate it, and create a cover to make it like a real book. I didn’t win, but it was so much fun. It was also comforting to get recognized for something I had created. It’s amazing that after all this time I still remember it. That story, and that teacher, meant so much to me.

My grandfather was another major inspiration in my life. He was a musician. He sang and yodeled, played the guitar and harmonica, worked in the music industry, and was a fantastic songwriter. He was also a ghostwriter for some of the major country performers in Nashville back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. He taught me how to play the guitar and how to use my story ideas to create songs. He was so much fun. Even as sad as a lot of my stories were as a child, he would help me put such a twist on them that the good guy always won in the end.

There were times in my life I almost gave up writing completely. As a teenager, I lived with an extremely abusive father. Kids were never his idea of an accomplishment. But since I was the product of the pill not working and my mother ran away when I was eight, he was stuck with me. He would make sure I knew weekly how much of a loser I was, how I was never wanted, how he wished I would go away, how worthless I was, etc. There was the physical abuse, too. If I wrote anything, he would tear it up in my face and tell me how horrible it was and that I would never amount to anything. I would hide my writing, not wanting to give him more ammo for his rages. I still had to write. It was cathartic; having to pour out emotions that I couldn’t do otherwise. I couldn’t show anyone. I never thought they were good enough or that people would laugh at me. After a particularly terrifying incident, I left home at fifteen and never went back. I don’t have any of those stories. The day after I left, my father burned anything I had left behind, trying to blot out my memory.

After graduating high school at sixteen, I didn’t write a lot. What I did write was more along the lines of a thought or two here and there. I was too scared and too beaten down to try anything creative. I had to survive. But in time, I began to write again. At first, it was smaller projects. Poetry came first. I could pour out a lot of emotion in poetry. There was so much hurt and grief. It was a cleansing, of sorts. This cleansing took about ten years, but at least I was able to become strong enough to know I wanted to write. I did just that. I had some of my poetry published in anthologies.

I always loved reading. I would devour books. Going to the library was a weekly adventure to see what new book or what new author I would discover next. I was always drawn to science fiction and fantasy. It was my escape, my dream world. My first short story publication was in 1995 called “Dream Trap.” It was my first published step into science fiction as a writer.

2012-10-04 10.09.35My love for science fiction and fantasy has not wavered. My first book, Strength of Spirit, is an urban fantasy. It came out in 2012 with MuseItUp Publishing. In 2014, it won the 2014 Gold Global eBook Award for Paranormal Mystery. I was so thrilled. Not only is this book my first professional publication, it won an award.

I have come a long way. There is still so much to learn and so much to do in life. There is an adventure around the corner. Even though I look back and still see that scared, beaten child, I know I am so much more than that. My writing is a testament that I overcame great distress and agony to write and to be published. I still polish my craft and still want to learn from others. It empowers me and sparks my creativity. I don’t believe a writer can ever know “enough” or even know what enough is. Writing is an ever-growing process, one that flows and should not become stagnate.
